Etymology Matters
In the world of skin and beauty, words like “esthetician” and “cosmetologist” get tossed around frequently—but how often do we stop to ask: What do they really mean? At Dyad Skin and Wellness, we believe that language shapes understanding—and how we define our work directly affects how we approach care.
Legally, I’m licensed as an esthetician under the umbrella of cosmetology, a title governed by the state Board of Cosmetology. But the word “cosmetology” has never felt like the right fit. It sounds clinical, even commercial—and doesn’t begin to describe the layered, relational, and transformative work we do every day.
That’s why I believe etymology—the study of a word’s origin—matters. When we trace a word back to its roots, we uncover meaning that’s often deeper, more resonant, and more revealing than we expected.
Cosmetology and the Cosmos: More Connected Than You Think
The word cosmetology stems from the word cosmetic, which itself originates from the root cosm—as in cosmos.
At first glance, it might seem odd to link facials and makeup to stars and galaxies. But the root word cosm is far more expansive than we give it credit for.
Cosmos
A harmonious arrangement of individual components, designed to create a beautiful and orderly system.
Cosmology
The study of how unique parts operate in connection with one another within a larger, cohesive whole.
These aren’t just concepts from astronomy—they’re principles of beauty, order, balance, and deep connection. And they apply to how we treat skin, how we understand the body, and how we care for our clients.
Who can argue that the perfect arrangement of color, length and style does not result in hair that is more lovely to behold? Or, that the artistic use of color, shading, and application of makeup might create a systematic and cohesive look that elevates and beautifies the canvas?
Skin as a System — and You as a Cosmology
At Dyad, we work from the belief that your body is a living system—a human cosmology of interconnected parts. Your skin is in constant relationship with your nervous system, digestive health, hormones, and emotions.
We don’t just treat the surface. We approach skin care by honoring the entire system of you. This includes:
Supporting skin’s structure (fibroblasts, collagen, hydration)
Addressing inflammation and stress responses
Creating harmony between skin, body, and mind
Honoring emotional patterns that show up on the skin
This is more than skincare. It’s system care.
As Above, So Below: A Dyadic Approach
In embracing a cosmological framework, we also embrace dyadic wisdom—the principle that what happens within is reflected without, and vice versa. Skin is not a separate organ to be controlled or polished. It is a messenger, a mirror, a part of the larger whole.
Our Kansas City skincare studio is built on the belief that real beauty comes from connection. From honoring the rhythms of the body. From restoring harmony to the systems that hold you.
We’re Not Just Cosmetologists. We’re Cosmologists.
We’re redefining what it means to be a practitioner in the world of skincare and wellness. We don’t just apply treatments—we observe, support, and co-create balance within your internal and external ecosystem.
So the next time you look in the mirror, know this:
You are not a surface.
You are a system.
You are a cosmos.
And you are worth tending to with the depth and care that such a universe deserves.
